I could have sworn there was a way to make channels postable only by admins?

You can set the one default #general channel to be admin-only. But we've been using that channel as the main hub for on-topic discussions (it's now <#C5T9GPWFL|>), so there's no way to turn that into the admin-only announcements channel without weirdly breaking continuity and our history search tools.

I'm definitely in Slacks where there is a read-only announcements channel that only allows for admin posting and a general channel as well

but I don't know how that's set up and it might be a special paid feature

It could also be where they rename #general to <#CGMJ7323Z|> (or whatever), and then make a new #general. We could have done that, but it would have broken continuity — that's the reason we didn't do it.

We're doing a soft-reboot of the <#C018Q3T30LW|> channel.

This channel gives community members a fun way to connect and get to know one another. Every so often, you’ll be paired up with one other random person in this channel, via our friendly neighbourhood <@UFQ0XSFH6> bot. You and your pair can schedule a video call, or just chat via DMs. These pairings should happen about once per month on average, though the schedule will fluctuate a bit.

If you were already in that channel, you'll need to rejoin. Apologies — we had an issue with no-shows, so we removed everyone and are starting fresh.

Once per month, when there's a decent chance of either person not showing up, seems a little sparse: how about once per week, with the expectation that most appointments will be dropped, as this gives over four times more opportunities for it to work?

Well, the cause of the no-show issue was that a lot of folks joined the community and then left. So there were inactive accounts in that channel, and <@UFQ0XSFH6> seemingly isn't smart enough to ignore inactive accounts. So by removing everyone, we've re-seeded the channel with people who are active. If you'd personally like to have more frequent calls with other people, I think you could just drop some sort of "Hi, I want to meet more people, let's setup some calls, DM me!" in that channel (or even <#C01932BJGE8|>) and I bet other folks would take you up on it.

Is there any way to configure the bot? A “low nag” mode would be appreciated tbh. The “midpoint check-in” alerts feel very spammy.

I've turned the bot all the way down. Yes, there are in fact _many…_ _higher_ nag settings. This is the very bottom. You can feel the hull scraping against the sea floor of Silicon Valley — jetsam and wrecks of past startups, Peter Thiel's morals, warm vents of VC sulphur that extremophile serial founders somehow thrive within.

Slack has given us a free trial for the next 90 days. That means the full history is searchable. Enjoy! (But, of course, don't get hooked on the pro features. We'll be back on the free plan when the trial ends.)

(Yes, there's Mariano's <http://history.futureofcoding.org|history search tool>, but it has some limits.)

Also <https://github.com/akkartik/foc-archive|my static site stored in a git repo> (~200MB download) that you can `grep` through. That has complementary limitations.

I also just noticed that Pleroma is written in Elixir and runs on Alpine Linux, which could be a fairly parsimonious and low-maintenance stack. I might put up a test installation next week. It's ActivityPub, but I think we can configure it to take out character limits and not peer with other instances.

Discord is also an option. It has it’s own downsides of course, threads being the biggest one for long running discussions :thinking_face:

Our community is now set up on *Linen*, a(nother) tool that makes our public Slack history searchable.

There are some design decisions behind this tool that make it not-quite-ideal for us (eg: while it does index all our public channels, it only displays posts that have replies). But I'm actively talking to the main dev, and they're doing a lovely job of tweaking things and planning changes that would make the tool better for how we use Slack.

I'd love for you all to kick the tires on this and see if it suits your needs. Let me know if you have questions / feedback for the dev, too.

Some guidelines:

Try to make your content relevant to FOC. Does your project have to be the most futuristic amazing project ever? No. But it should somehow aspire or be moving towards future of coding topics. Try and make sure the community sees how it fits in.

Keep top level posts to tweetish length and only post top level once per day.

I’ve always wanted a place where I can share my on-going projects with others. But I’ve also really wanted to see what others are working about and thinking about. This will hopefully be a great place to do that. Looking forward to seeing what you all have going.

I greatly appreciate how much time and care is spent on understanding the different modes of chat in this community, and creating subsections to make space for them. Looking forward to sharing my amateurish work! :grin:

It was extremely informal. We essentially showed up and had a nice chat with other folks in the call. The main point I tried to hammer was that in designing any product with a large team (but especially programming tools) it is useful to have and teach the team a set of principals that drive the design. Circuits is an in-game programming tool in our product Rec Room, a game for building games. These are the principals we established and spread across the team to make sure some common themes come out in the design. You may recognize some of them as being ~stolen~ borrowed from some of your other favorite languages:

generally speaking though, seed rounds seem way up from those numbers

I talked to someone a few weeks back that raised $4.5M without a plan, product or users, not sure how much he exchanged in equity for that. You don't always have to do pre-seed either

Agreed William, though I don't think those things rise to the level of principals and are generally captured in other documents. Part of the goal of the principals is to keep them small enough that a large team remember them. Brains and mouths are lossy so the principals are optimized to carry sufficient information without considerable weight. You always want to add more but each additional piece of information increases the chance of losing information from communication or memory.

Also, I think this thread is getting a little off topic so I wouldn't mind continuing in a separate thread elsewhere and talking in more depth. I don't quite know the culture of this slack workspace yet so I don't know if folks do that here but some other's I'm a part of may split this out to not detract from the TCs original post.

It seems like Kam (the dev) has been burning down the list of features I asked for, based on what we'd probably find most useful. But if it doesn't do something you want, let me know and perhaps it can be added.

I think this tool solves some significant problems with Slack, and with a not-bad UI to boot. But if we're not even using it, that's a problem too, hah.

A way for us to reduce some of the downsides of Slack as a host of our community discussions. Chiefly, old Slack messages aren't visible or searchable, but Linen allows us to search and (nicely) view that history. Secondarily, Linen exposes that full history to search engines. In other words, Linen makes our community a little more like a classic BB.

I think so. It doesn't replace slack, just archive and searchable? I might pass it along to others in that case

If you add support for GitHub issues &amp; discussions, I'd probably be willing to pay for it (details ofc)

Their search is horrendous, it can't even do prefix matching (searching "foo" will not return matches for "foobar")

Sorry about the search the team is me and one other person full time right now so we are using the standard full text search from Postgres. We’ll use a dedicated search service once we have more bandwidth.

The goal is to get Linen to be indexed by Google so they can handle the search. If you google <http://siteslack-chats.kotlinlang.org|site:slack-chats.kotlinlang.org> for example they have around 20-30k results on Google.

As a side note we’ve pushed out a ton of updates. <http://linen.futureofcoding.org/> since last few months. The UI has been changed quite a bit to match Slack’s UI. Since the site is more dynamic we render a static version for search engine so the SEO isn’t impacted.

We’ve changed up pagination to be more google search friendly along with a bunch of sitemap updates <http://linen.futureofcoding.org/sitemap.xml> <@UC2A2ARPT> if you have a chance you should upload the sitemap to <https://search.google.com/search-console> and this should help with search ranking and community discoverability.

On the higher end we’re seeing 20-30k pages of Linen in a community getting indexed by google. The more you share and link <http://linen.futureofcoding.org|linen.futureofcoding.org> the more likely Google will pick it up. So the more you share the links publicly the better.

The motivation here (as outlined in the handbook, but tl;dr) is that we use a bunch of special tools that build atop Slack, which help us refer back to past discussions that are of lasting interest. Thanks <@U0123H7JRDM>! I’d say there’s at least 3 ~ 4 of work accumulated in Unit, with probably 90% custom code (written from scratch).

I had to pause/slow down development a few times, but, right, when I think of total accumulated effort, my guess is 3 ~ 4 years. The actual conception of unit dates back 7 years ago. :older_man:

Very impressive! Do you use Unit yourself to build software for clients?

That is surely one of the goals! Unit is not production-ready yet, so I am not using it for work for now. I did built a couple unit websites for clients, but they were very small self-contained utilities (like a little form to make an HTTP request with a token).

Phenomenal. Just an enormous amount of work, so well done. Very original. And it feels like a language designed around how using it should feel, instead of imposing restrictions to avoid certain bad results, or adhering to some sort of theoretical purity or something. Very inspiring.

This is for a commercial project and as such I have to balance the needs of shipping something useful and observable for my cofounder & prompt engineer vs shipping features for the user. I don’t think it’s very easy for me to carve out more than 90 minutes from a work day, and I’d hate for there to be no discussion. Maikel, what do you think about narrowing the time slots? Maybe presentations can try to focus on just two things like “the big idea” and “the most recent challenge” or “a couple cool features”

We've started using a chess clock at Ink & Switch, where presenters get half of the time and discussion gets half of the time. It's been working really well to ensure presenters stay focused and questioners don't dig rabbit holes.

But it hinges a bit on someone playing referee.

Maybe there are clear themes between the meetups, but otherwise, I’d prefer to see everything and then if there’s much more to be said, we can encourage a follow up meetup for those interested where the audience can go deeper

Splitting into two meetups is for sure a good idea I think so that everybody can get 15min if needed

The chess clock works really well because then questioners can interrupt whenever they want without the speaker feeling like they're losing their presentation time.

I am trying to make a list of categories of the demos so that we can split up the meeting into two meetups, but I dont know the category for all the demo's.. these the categories I've got so far:
• AI
• Programming languages
• Collaboration
• Visual programming
• Interactive programming
Can everybody who wants to demo please specify in which category your demo belongs? If other categories are needed then don't hesitate to add them

calculang fits under programming languages (functional programming) or interactive programming; but what I intend to share is focused on FP (programming languages category)

mine is data analysis/visualization + navigation + AI

WIkifunctions probably fits best in "Collaboration"

"Interactive programming" sounds like a good one for me, although if I could pick one freely, I'd go for "convivial computing": the goal rather than the technique.

ReSheet is interactive programming, I envision visual programming for it, but it’s not there yet

I suggest a new category: *Future of Programming*. Text-based "code" covers only a small slice of programming, what else is possible? A baby-step towards breaking the ingrained belief that programming of computers is best expressed only as text (false).

I suspect that all our demos would fit under "future of programming", but that we have different views of what will/should change in that future.

I've been looking at the categories and the main two categories are AI and interactive programming but there's no true separation possible to give each of the two meetup a category in which all the demo's fell. Perhaps it's an idea to split up in order of submission in this thread for now?

I really enjoyed the last meetup, and am looking forward to doing this more regularly. We've got a handful of demos lined up (from <@U01AD80KMLK>, <@UGWUJUZHT>, <@UFQ1ZEJ0G>, and <@UJBAJNFLK>). To check in on the timing: that's 15 minutes max per demo *including* questions, right?

Yes. The goal is to split that time 50:50, but if someone needs extra time for their demo then we can carve out some of the question time.

We've had a good turnout at the first two, and this feels like a great new way for members of the community to get together and interact. We do a 7.5 minute demo and 7.5 mins for questions, using a chess clock to keep track of those times so that the audience can interrupt at any time.

Ah I snoozed on sharing it here — sorry folks — but on <https://time.is/1600_25_September_2024_in_UTC?FoC_Virtual_Meetup|25 September 16:00 UTC> (_12 hours from now_) we're doing another virtual meetup. The format is different this time. Instead of demos, we're all going to kick the tires on the new <https://wiki.futureofcoding.org|Future of Coding Wiki>. The wiki is currently, well, rather empty. So we'll jam on it together and try to figure out what sorts of articles we'd like to have. I hope to see you there.

No, but that's a good idea. Generally, we have them on a Wednesday near the end of the month.

one observation: urls are case sensitive:

No nested lists yet. Not convinced that we should have them.

Also, thanks for that :bug: 

As for URLs being case-sensitive, I'm not sure what the solve is. I think we should make it the norm that URLs are all lowercase, but I don't know a good way to technically enforce that.

I just realized that I’ve never once figured out how to get that site to show me the event time in _my_ time zone. :joy: Can it do that?

I guess it’s moot since Luma made it easy.

When I open the site, it tells me the time in my time zone. I'm not logged in or anything — I think it's just doing an IP lookup?

System time perhaps. But I think it hasn't worked for me either in the past, though it does today.

This site is basically the reason <https://akkartik.name/post/2024-11-07-devlog|my recent timezone calculator> has a design constraint of, "what I see is what everybody sees."

Just tried a few different configurations, and it's totally reliable. Which is very annoying. I swear it wasn't working!

Ah, here's a screenshot showing it not working. I took this a few weeks ago. No sign of location.

Sites can get the time zone from the browser. If, like me, you have a high-privacy configuration for your browser, they get none or a wrong one. For example, under Linux I use LibreWolf, which always claims UTC as its time zone. That's a pain when looking for local bus schedules, but otherwise I can live with it. And for bus schedules, I use my phone.
