I never finished my 2024 tax return, I had extended and paid but did not file. Now when filing with freetaxusa it is saying that I need an IP Pin or to mail it in instead. Are there other options ? Can a preparer file it for me without a pin?

You can retrieve your IP Pin online https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin A preparer would need the IP Pin to e-file it. Otherwise, you would have to mail it.

I don't actually have a pin, I'm being asked for it because it's an old return not because of identity theft. Based on what I'm seeing, if I request one I'll need to use it every year, so probably not worth it and better to mail it in

There was definitely a Pin issued if they are asking for it. Old returns do not cause a Pin requirement. You can opt out of the IP Pin program at any time. So it's not forever.

Seems like if you want to file 2024 right now you would need a pin
