I have a question here. new guy so perhaps this was posted already I am on YNAB for 6 months and its the first time I can say I am a bit in control! I read the article on frum.finance re YNAB reimbursements and am shy to say, tried for 2 hours to replicate the chain and cant get it to work. something is missing in my understanding (or in the wording of the article :)) How do I get to reconcile the CC account after all that? it shows (exactly as per your screenshot) a transaction out (the origianl reimbursable), it shows "as if" the money came in the account from the "money owed to us" account but the money did not actually come in! so I cannot reconcile. in the end, I paid money out and am waiting for the money to come in, so I cant understnad the whle method. what am I missing ?

I don't understand it either. What i do is just change the real transaction's payee to the fake account and add a memo saying who the payee is and who im paying for
And when someone pays me back, I create an inflow transaction with the account set to the real account they sent money to and set the payee to the fake account, with a memo saying who's paying me back
I also wouldn't make the fake account exclusive to money owed to you. It can also be used for money you owe. Just always write memos with the names so you can search in the account and tally up the amounts
I personally have a different fake account for money I owe, but it gets complicated when the the same person appears in both accounts

How do I get to reconcile the CC account after all that?
Why would the balance ever be incorrect that you need to reconcile it? If you are adding two fake trasnfer of 3$ and -3$ then the balance won’t have actually changed…
so the credit card isn’t where the money owed is being tracked, it’s in the money owed account! so that is the account that should be off balance
once the money comes in you’ll make a transfer to the money owed account so you can reconcile it and get back to 0 in there

something is missing. perhaps we need to do the actual steps again in YNAB. I followed your steps as written in article and arrived at a different result. if I lend money to somebody, the money actually left my account. then when I make the two fake transfers in/out, the CC stays with a balance (original loan). how does that get taken care? I understand how the balance is tracked in the face account, how the category gets netted out in the main plan, but how does the CC get paid?
m
The cc getting paid isn't part of this. It gets paid as normal with your monthly payment.
b
again, 1. you make a purchase on the CC using the a/r. assuming a/r has no money assigned to it, it is now negative 2. you create your step two transaction which "pretends" that money came into the CC for the a/r category from the fake account. 3. great! you track the debt in fake account, check. you zeroes out the a/r category, check. 4. but since the money didnt actually come in into the CC (even if it went out in step 1). what do you do now? assign money to CC? that step is missing. how do you now proceed?
m
oh I think that is the issue, you don't categorize the cc transaction as a/r, you give it the real category, like food, try that, if you have issues let's keep iterating then i'll fix the article
i definitely do this all the time on my ynab, but i might have described it wrong in the article
b
in the article and the picture its to a/r account
m
right i'll correct it if it works for you after that adjustment
b
it doesnt work... I am giving up... the tracking account shows a negative amount when it should be positive (money receivable). I guess the issue is that we are trying to square a circle and doing some type of double entry accounting where it s really not deisgned for it. I thank you for your time and am glad it works for you... but I think 3 hours is enough time tried to make it work for me :(
m
apologies! I didn't realize you were getting frustrated. I will do it myself again, take pictures, update the article, and ping you again. Would you then be willing to try again?
b
sure... I will try.
