I'm trying to decide between YNAB and Monarch, and I found this video that gives a great breakdown of both platforms. It explains their budgeting methodologies and highlights their pros and cons.

Monarch Money vs YNAB_ Which Budget App Is Right For You.mp4
Anyone here have used both platforms, and can help me decide?
m
I can tell you that all the software we are building to provide automated insights to the frum community will only be compatible with YNAB.
Also monarch is not a zero based budgeting platform so all the material, content, hashkafa we push here would be incompatible. Every dollar is the only other platform that comes close but that platform also has reasons why I'm not a fan (they are anti credit card, and more)
Also frum.finance coaches are only trained in YNAB if you need help.
Also we only offer free licenses for YNAB.
But really, whatever app you'll actually use is the best app for you.

One of the points in the video was that monarch can give you insights of your average spend in the last few months for each category and it's not possible with YNAB is that true or there are ways to get that info?
m
You absolutely have that in YNAB
e
Do you give out YNAB of licenses?
m
If you spend more then you make yes
e
I'm on a tight budget now so one of the reasons why I wanted to go with monarch is the first year 50% discount
m
Sounds like a free license would be even more convincing

I think I'll go with Monarch for now, not necessarily because it's better than YNAB, but because it feels less intense for me as I start budgeting without having to learn a whole new system (like every dollar having a job). Monarch feels more like the way I naturally think about budgeting. If you want, I can let you know how it goes.
m
Yes monarch is very much the way people naturally approach budgeting and davka why I discourage it. Hatzlocho! I hope it works well for you.

Monarch has been great for me over the past month since I started using it. YNAB was too confusing for me.
