How do I categorize a cc statement credit in YNAB? Is it a “payment” to the cc, or is it “cash”/“ready to assign” cuz the cc payment is already funded from the categories that I used the cc on?
h
Hey Eli! When you get a statement credit on your credit card in YNAB, you should categorize it as an inflow to your credit card account. This means you are getting money back, and it should be treated like a refund. Here's what you do step-by-step: 1. Enter the Credit: Go to your credit card account in YNAB and enter the statement credit as an inflow. 2. Categorize the Credit: Use the same category that you used for the original purchase. For example, if the original purchase was categorized under 'Groceries', then categorize the credit under 'Groceries' too. 3. Adjust Your Budget: This will add money back to your 'Groceries' category and reduce the amount you owe on your credit card. By doing this, you make sure that your budget reflects the money you got back and your credit card balance is updated correctly. Easy peasy!

was the credit a return or like redeemed cash back?
f
Cash back
Sorry, should have specified
m
“ready to assign” like income

I worded it wrong, that’s why albus didn’t answer correctly. Not his fault
m
Right, I think his answer was correct but had a feeling you worded it wrong so asked the clarifyer
f
(Just in case he is sentient)
m
I’m marking him as yes since he gave the right response
f
True that
I changed my grade to yes

Technically Albus is still correct. Cashback is really just a rebate on money you spent. So it should be an inflow transaction proportionally split between all the categories you've used that credit card for. 👍

So I set it as "ready to assign", but it's allowing me to assign it, which I think it should cuz since I already funded the payment from other categories, and my future payment will be minus the credit amount, technically I should have that money available. Am I confused?
m
It's not letting you assign that money?
f
nopes
m
You should never have to fund payments. That's automatic.
f
correct
I'm referring to that automatic funding that comes from using credit cards

So when you remove the ready to assign category, and add it back in, you see no changes in the amount you have ready to assign?
f
no change
strange
m
Can you try their live support? If that doesn't help and no one else chimes in here you can get on a call with me or a frum.finance coach

When you remove the 'Ready to Assign' category and add it back in, the amount you have ready to assign should not change. This is because the 'Ready to Assign' amount represents the money in your accounts that doesn't have a job in your budget yet. Removing and adding the category back does not affect the actual amount of money you have available to assign to different categories.
m
Yes Albus but I meant including the intermediate step, did the value change at all. Between it being assigned and not assigned.

I get the same thing when I redeem cash back, must be a bug. What I found is that the extra money is now assigned to the credit card payment itself, so you go to that credit card and manually move the amount redeemed to ready to assign
m
Interesting. I guess I've never noticed and just assumed it was getting added back to ready to assign.
I'm sure if we all complain enough to them we will either gain clarity or they will fix it.
s
Haha yup
f
Yeah, that’s what I ended up doing just manually moving the money
d
A credit card inflow categorized to Ready to Assign won't add cash to your budget—it only reduces the balance you owe on your credit card. It also won't change the amount you have set aside for payment or the amount in Ready to Assign (unless that inflow creates a positive balance ↗️ on your credit card). It may look like cash has been added to your Credit Card Payment category, but the only number that will change is your balance on the credit card. If you have too much money in your Credit Card Payment category now, feel free to move it somewhere else in your budget.
Similar to the behavior when paying a line of credit account balance with a credit card. It doesn't move the budgeted money from the line of credit account to the credit card. Gotta do it manually. Also mentioned in the docs
(I have line of credit accounts in YNAB for service providers like landscapers who I have a growing balance with until they bill me. I add a transaction after every service from the LoC account to the provider, and then when I actually pay every few months it's a transaction to the LoC account)
f
You mean I should read documentation?!
That’s ridiculous
d
Yeah, sometimes I wish it was open source so I could just read the code 😆
