YNAB question: For December, it says that I have ~1600 ready to assign. I want to assign it to expenses in January, but it shows that I only have ~600. Where is this discrepancy coming from? there are 2 overspent categories in Dec, one of which is a credit card.

You're saying when you move forward the money disappears? If you have overspent categories, it will automatically adjust by pulling from read to assign.

Oh interesting, so then how do I account for the credit card, since it's a variable amount...

Hey Pessi! When you use a credit card, the amount you spend can change every month. Here's how you can handle it in YNAB (You Need A Budget) step-by-step: 1. Add Your Credit Card: First, add your credit card to YNAB. This will create a 'Credit Card Payments' category automatically. 2. Track Your Spending: When you buy something with your credit card, enter the transaction in YNAB. The money will move from the spending category (like 'Groceries' or 'Dining Out') to the 'Credit Card Payments' category. 3. Make a Payment: When it's time to pay your credit card bill, go to the 'Credit Card Payments' category. The amount you have set aside for the payment will be shown there. Record the payment in YNAB by selecting the credit card account and hitting the 'Record Payment' button. This will update both your credit card and bank account balances. By following these steps, you make sure that the money you spend on your credit card is always covered by your budget, helping you avoid debt and stay on track with your finances.

I don't remember having this in the past though...
Just to make sure I understand Albus's answer re: credit cards, let me walk through an example. This morning, my Chase cc showed a line item for gas. Usually I just approve it by hitting enter. Should I be doing something different?
m
Nope that's perfect.
It automatically does the rest
m
Right, I thought so. So why does it count my cc as "overspending" and will cover it at the end of the month with money that's ready to assign if I'm setting aside for each expense that's inside the cc bill?
m
It shouldn't if you did that. So there is something else going on. I can meet or a coach can meet with you to look at what you're saying but can you try their live support first?
Overspending would be if you didn't budget for it.
m
Cool - didn't realize they had that option!
m
Yup! A really incredible team from what I can tell so far.
Please report back what you've learned

If I’m not misunderstanding, It’s very simple. the 2 overspent categories will not automatically get covered by your ready to assign money until the month rolls over. While it is December, they are saving around $1000 of your ready to assign money, but have not designated it to the specific categories yet. Therefore you have 1600 ready to assign, and only about 600 available to assign in January as the remaining 1000 is being held. When January begins, any already spent money will automatically be assigned.
m
How do overspent categories get covered then? Bc it does 0 out.
m
After a lot of back and forths between multiple different agents, they saw it was coming from a cash expense that I categorized as accounts receivable and when I first started YNAB in September, there was a credit card that wasn't imported properly. So I had to reconcile both cards and then specifically assign money to cover them through December.
m
any now it's all working? What was your experience like with their support team?
m
They said it should all be working now so I hope it works out well from here on!
It would have been nice to have a video support option, since there were long lag times between responses. They also sent me a bunch of links, some of which were hard to understand.
