I'm setting up ynab now, and I recalled a discussion how the usage of plaid to link accounts could bring issues. Anyone have further experience/thoughts on this?
I assume that linking accounts is for the convenience of automatically importing transactions?
m
i have 100+ people using ynab and i have only heard about this once.
It's only for conveience, but it's a really important convenience. So much so that most of the #C04G7BK8GQJ is about trying to find ways to import transactions into ynab bc they don't link there.

Yes, linking accounts is for the convenience of automatically importing transactions. This means that when you link your bank accounts, credit cards, or other financial accounts, the transactions from those accounts will be automatically pulled into your budgeting or financial planning tool. This helps keep everything up to date without you having to manually enter each transaction.

Okay thanks
r
it's more than just convenience...a lot of transactions go back and forth automatically...imagine if I had enter those in automatically too
m
what do you mean back and forth automatically
r
transactions that are done via hora'at keva, or my income which is paid with direct deposit, etc.
m
i'm not understanding, isn't that still convenience?
r
washing machines are also a convenience but I think you'd agree that they're a step beyond that as well
in 2024 nobody would say I need a washing machine out of convenience
m
Definitely going to disagree with you here.
r
about the washing machine or linked accounts 🙂
t
He said linked accounts are a really important convenience btw
m
about both. They are both very important conveniences. We need to stop as a community conflating wants and needs.
r
ok...my wife would beg to differ (she keeps asking for a second washing machine 😁
m
again, important to help those around us understand the difference between a strong desire and a need.
r
and likewise I would go insane if I had to enter in every automatic payment manually
m
many people actually prefer using ynab with manually entering transactions, but i agree, I like automation. I also recognize it to be a convenience 🙂
r
how many automatic transactions do those people have? if I recall, when I lived in the states, this really wasn't much of a thing. Every bill was paid manually. But certainly in Israel, many people opt to have their bills automatically paid
m
idk how long ago you lived here but i haven't paid a bill manually in over 6 years besides for my landscaping

also whether or not my transactions or manual or automatic certainly would not change my amount of effort to put them into ynab. Both of them would be equally as annoying to me. I wouldn't care if I swiped a card manually or the card was auto-charged
r
why equally annoying? all you're left to do is categorize when it comes in
m
i am referring to automatic transactions versus manual transactions, not syncing versus manual input.
i agree syncing vs not-syncing is a big difference, as I said up top.
n
Only bills I pay manually are the ones where autopay requires bank but I can pay manually with a cc 🙄
