Anyone else experience YNAB getting confused which CC account a payment is for? It gets mixed up and I have to waste time ensuring it has the correct account recorded. If I mess up then I have to go back and clean it up.
t
Can you take a screenshot? I would never rely on auto imports. I always add my transactions manually and use the auto import as a fail safe, not a first defense.
b
I don't have the scenario right now. Adding transactions by hand is too tedious, I already spend enough time marking categories properly. I just don't really understand how it could mix up bank accounts but I guess it can.
t
Yeah I’d love to see it in action because if the accounts are linked it shouldn’t be happening. Adding transactions manually is THE way you don’t get overwhelmed with YNAB. They recommend doing it manually as well. I have met with people that can never get a grasp on YNAB because they don’t manually add it. Once you get used to it, it takes an extremely small amount of time. Especially when you think about how many transactions you actually spend in a day. What’s the max? 5 transactions? It takes seconds to add one.
b
I'll try to capture it next time. IDK, from a focus perspective, it's easier for me to me just handle transactions when they come in rather then try to enter them in the moment. If I'm at the store it's not a great time to enter it. Also, I do the tracking so if my wife buys sth I won't be able to or even know to add the transaction in the moment. Additonally, if i add the transactions manually then I still have to go and link them when they're automatically entered.
t
I’d love to chat to you about this. As soon as you leave the store in your car you can do it. Or at the end of the night you and your wife share receipts. I promise it’s not so bad and it will save you. And then all you’ll do approve a linked transaction.
m
I am not a fan of manually adding transactions.
b
@thousands-sunset-8939 In theory I would do what you're saying, especially since I hate waiting for the transaction to automatically come into YNAB - I even sometimes enter the pending transaction if YNAB picks it up. Practically though, with the hecticity (yes, I just made that word up) of my life, entering transactions in the car or sharing receipts at night will not remain consistent unfortunately. But I'm happy to chat to see if I'm missing some perks of entering them manually.
t
Just pointing out that YNAB does recommend that you enter transactions manually. I have seen that it helps tremendously with making sure issues don’t happen. People that I have met with to talk about YNAB would save themselves a lot of their issues if they entered manually.
b
Ya I've seen them recommend that. I agree it's probably easier with all things being equal but I don't find it very practical for myself.
t
I’m going to keep nudging you on this. I’m a pushy guy ;). Why is not practical for you? Walk me through how many purchases you might make in a given day and why it wouldn’t work?
b
lol, because I don't operate like that. It doesn't really matter how many transactions I do, it's really the setting and the mindset I'm in. Assuming I even remember to manually add the transaction, most situations I'm either rushing to the next thing or I just don't have the patience/headspace to sit there and manually add the transaction in the moment. I'm also not seeing a great advantage to entering transactions manually worth putting in the extra effort for it. Auto transactions generally work fine for me. Obviously this particular issue I'm raising is a hindrance to auto transactions but I'm more bothered by why YNAB gets mixed up than thinking I should start adding them manually.

tl;dr -> extra time, no value add

I so disagree with you @mysterious-tomato-10057. I’m for sure Team Manual Transactions. @broad-australia-98095 don’t get stuck in your old operating system. It’s time to upgrade your OS lol

Just a reminder, every single person I’ve met with to help with YNAB would have had zero issue if they kept up with their manual transactions
b
It's not an old OS lol, it's the one currently running and if I have to change it it's for more important things than YNAB. But I like the catchphrase lol. Also, even if manual is technically better, I feel it's like @mysterious-tomato-10057 saying "every single person I’ve met with to help with finances would have had (almost) zero issues if they properly budgeted and planned for retirement and all of life's other expenses"
m
that is definitely my catchphrase, but help me follow this, whats the parallel? are you saying "just like i wont do manual ynab, i also won't play for retirement" lol
b
lol no, I was just pointing out that the assumption that people can keep up with their manual transactions is a big "if"
m
oh yeah agreed 💯
I think automation is the only way people will actually do anything, so i don't like anything manual

Ok so the front of the t shirt says ‘Team Manual Transaction’ and the back says ‘Update Your OS’. What color should I get lol?

If we have to manually make the shirt then I'm out lol
