šŸ‘‹ my father is making the decision of how to take his pension. He had a high income, but did not save well for retirement. He asked for my opinion about how to take it. He is considering rolling it over into a traditional IRA, for the investment returns. I told him I don't really know these things, but I have some friends I could ask...

I'm from Israel started working in the US. My 401k has the option to deposit before tax, and then tax all withdraws. Or deposit after Tax and all withdraws are tax free (called Roth maybe?) Any advice/reasoning?

My company is switching their retirement investments around and removing some passively managed index funds to actively managed funds to "beat the market". I can still be in some index funds (fewer choices, but all solid) if I want. Are actively managed funds always a no go, or is it possible they may be worthwhile even with higher fees?

If a person's income is hovering at right around the Traditional IRA / Roth IRA cutoff, and may be above or below on a given year, which kind of IRA should they be funding? (Backdoor or not backdoor)

Hi Yonasan - I’m curious to figure out how one can be close to both phaseouts simultaneously - what kind of income level are we talking about?

Should I set up a retirement account with target date index funds or regular index funds which would yield higher returns and hope to able to stick to 4% rule when retirement comes around?

I'm helping my mother but don't know how to answer this- She's currently living off of her yerusha, but her burn rate is closer to 10-15% and she's slated to run out way before iy"H she won't need it anymore. We're trying to figure out a solution, but she's not interested in setting up a RightCapital account or starting the frum.finance journey this late in her financial life, so I'm hoping this is a question that's already been thought of. Which is better- for her to take her SSI now, early, which will decrease her burn rate but penalize her on her SSI income for life? Or is it better to wait until the SSI matures in a few years even if means burning through more of her nest egg now? Do the percentages match up, i.e. saving 8% now vs. an 8% decrease in SSI income, or is there a different formula? Thank you!

In the frum finance roadmap what is the logic behind not maxing out your 401k (or at least trying to) and instead stopping at employer match? Isn’t maxing it out a primary method for reducing taxable income?

Can someone help clarify because I’m definitely missing something I keep hearing about the Roth conversion ladder and the argument as far as I can tell goes: if u convert money from ur 401k to a Roth IRA when ur income is very low then ull be taxed a very small amount on the conversion and then (in 5 years) u can withdraw the money from the Roth tax free. But if the assumption is that ur performing the conversion when ur base income is ~0 then why not just withdraw from the 401k directly and skip the Roth? Won’t you be taxed the same amount on the 401k withdrawal regardless of whether u convert to Roth?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a personal roth IRA vs. an employer Roth 403b (aside from employer match) assuming a person is not maxing out their personal roth IRA?

401k rollover question. • Just switched jobs. • Old employer offered a 401k (plus match) using ADP. • New employer doesn't offer 401k at all. • I have to move (rollover) the money out of the ADP run account. • It's roth (not sure if the matching half that my employer put in is also considered roth or It's considered traditional). • The plan I chose in ADP is the vanguard 500 index fund - admiral class. Where should I roll it over to? (vanguard, m1, etc.) What's the best/easiest? For context, for now I just wanna move it, not necessarily to a place where I can continue to contribute/invest, just for it to sit and grow. Thanks in advance to all that offer help! Really appreciate it.

I just read too many posts about 401K pre-tax vs post-tax... šŸ˜– Is it correct (albeit oversimplified) to say that people with high income are more likely to benefit from pre-tax; People with lower income are more likely to benefit from post-tax? Is there anything about frum lifestyle that would change that equation?

My employer does not offer a 401k plan, but I opened an IRA account in Vanguard and realized I never invested the money. What funds should I be choosing?

I apologize in advance if this is a newbie question! I have two previous employers who had their 401k plans with vanguard. Now that I've left those companies, should I be rolling those into a non-employer based IRA? Is there risk is just leaving it where it is?

Is investing in a 401k (Transamerica) with no company match worth it? I believe I know the answer, but I thought asking to get a conscience answer wouldn't hurt. (Not sure if its been asked before)
