How do I figure out what a normal amount is to be paying for car insurance. It seems like something that insurance companies play around with without us ever knowing why they are deciding on their numbers. I’d like to be able to have a better understanding of what to expect so that when I talk to an insurance company I can know whether I’m getting a good or bad deal.

My lease is up in a month. It's a 2020 Honda Odyssey with about 22k miles. I'm thinking to buy it out for about 19k. Anything to consider before going ahead and/or any tips?

Looking for general perspective about lease vs lease to buy vs buying. Barring the case that someone just has tons of money to spend, is there ever a good financial reason to lease or lease to buy rather then buy?

real life leasing example - a friend of mine decided that he was going to do a lease to buy. his payments were super low only $270 a month for a brand new honda civic. 30 mo later, he went ahead w the purchase. Total Costs: lease down payment: $1k lease payments: $270*30 = $8100 Purchase down payment: $2k Purchase Payments $450* 60 = $27k Total: $38,100 The cost of this specific car would have been 20k brand new i believe!

I'm looking to finance a car and I have some money saved up that I was planning on putting down. I'm looking at rates around 7.5 percent; is that high enough that I should put this money down as opposed to putting it into a retirement/investment account?

Family member of mine is coming out of a lease on a 2021 Toyota RAV4 (37K miles). Choices are: 1. Buy it for ~$20K cash out of savings 2. Buy and sell, make ~$3K, roll that money into a new lease of a Nissan Rouge, no money down, monthly payment $369 Which one makes more fiscal sense? I'm not great at calculating this whole lease vs buy used thing, I'm a leaser.

Question - My family may need to very soon replace our minivan. We currently need 7 seats and by the end of the summer b'shaah tova will need 8 seats. So we could still fit in an 8-seater minivan. We are hopefully that at some point we might need more than 8 seats. We can get a minivan now, and if/when it is no longer large enough sell it and upgrade to a 12 seater, or get a 12 seater now. Some of my thoughts: • I assume that within 10 years, the number of seats we need will start to decrease as children b'ezras Hashem get married move out • A minivan lasts longer and decreases in value at a lower rate than a full size van, so reselling it would be easier. • I have a connection who is well connected to marketing in Lakewood and is confident that he could get the minivan resold quickly and easily if/when we would want to sell it • I don't have strong feelings on objectively if it would be preferable to be driving a minivan or a full size van, all else being equal. Maybe I should? Thoughts from the oilam? cc @mysterious-tomato-10057 I'm sure you've probably thought through something along these lines.

OK so I was convinced by the other thread that I should get a minivan. I looked at https://www.toyotacertified.com/ and see that Siennas with over 50k miles are $36k-38k, and I see at https://www.buyatoyota.com/centralatlantic/inventory/results/?series=sienna&year=2025 that a dealership near me has a brand new 2025 Sienna for $41k. Is there any reason I wouldn't get a new one? 50K+ miles for a 3k discount doesn't seem worth it.

ok ok ok one more. I don't need the newest model car. I tried searching for new 2024 models (both Sienna and Odyssey) and am not sure how to find them. Any good way to find new previous model cars? (I'm assuming they would be cheaper)

In case this is helpful to anyone, some advice that a coworker gave me that I am now trying: 1. Locate several dealers within reasonable distance. 2. Email one of the further ones, and ask them for the out-the-door cost that they can give you for your vehicle of choice. 3. Take the offer from that dealer, and email a closer dealer and ask them if they can beat that offer. 4. If they beat it, take that offer to a closer dealer and ask them if they can beat it. 5. Rinse and repeat until you aren't getting better offers. My coworker said he got almost 3k off of the original price this way. I just emailed dealer number one and will report back on if this gets me anywhere.

We're buying a van. Our options are an more expensive, older van that's a hybrid, or an newer, less expensive non-hybrid (details in thread). Is there any way to estimate out the cost tradeoff over time, considering that the cheaper one is less used & theoretically likely to last longer? Any opinions for which you'd pick & why? Both cars match our needs -- we're about 50-50 for which one we want, so it's boiling down to which is more financially worthwhile.

Any opinions on buying a Chrysler Pacifica? they're a lot cheaper than Odyssey/Sienna. RepairPal gives them a reliability score of 4.5/5, while Siennas for the past several year are at 4/5.

Our mechanic just told us he recommends parking our minivan and getting a new one. 3 years ago (when the used car market was very rough), we got a 2012 Odyssey that we ended up putting a lot of money into. What is the recommendation of cpo vs new? It seems like the price difference is around $15k, which (although it's a lot) doesn't seem like that much for a brand new car. Anything I should be thinking about? And any thoughts if a Honda/Toyota is the only thing I should be looking at, or anything else I should be considering?
