I live in a 1300 sq ft 2 bedroom apt and my most recent BGE bill was around $275. We do have to keep the heat on pretty high all the time because the insulation is awful and my son’s room gets freezing, but this is significantly steeper than any other bill. Is this normal right now? Does anyone have suggestions?

On tuition reduction applications, I see questions equivalent to • "what is your estimated tuition payment for each child in your family next year?" or • "how much do you think you can pay next year for each child?" I'm never sure how to answer these. Do I just put in the same value for the current year? Should I enter less? Should I enter a little more, even if this year was a struggle as it is? If more, how much more? 10% more? 15% more? Should I not spend time thinking about this, because the schools don't really use this in their calculations?

Someone from BGE knocked on my door and said that due to the increases in energy costs, they are doing some sort of free installations (sounded like light bulbs, shower heads, and a few other things). I didn't really have time to get a full understanding but he wanted me to schedule and appointment for tomorrow. Does anyone know about it? Is it legit?

TAG Baltimore is having our campaign now. All donations are much appreciated! This money will be used to support TAG for the whole year. As a TAG volunteer, I really see up close how TAG is helping so many people. https://crowdspark.com/tagbaltimore/shiftyourfuture/teams/shoshanalinzer

We're doing teh analysis on if a 529 account is worth it. The Agudah website suggests a savings of about 400/child, based on a estimated 8% state/local tax rate. But does the 529 give you the deduction for local taxes? I thought its just on state taxes, which has a ~5% tax rate. Can anyone clarify for me if you get a deduction on county taxes as well?

PSA for people who only eat chicken on shabbos for budgetary reasons: Costco (at least by us in Silver spring, but I'm guessing the others too) apparently regularly marks down empire chicken drumsticks to 1.29/lb. Each package is 13-15 drumsticks and was about $7, so only about 50 cents per piece of chicken.

And, on a related note - anyone has recommendation for an architect? We have a floor plan already but I need an architect (or engineer) to make sure that it makes sense structurally.

What bank do people use here for personal banking? I moved to Baltimore 3 years ago and never switched my bank accounts to a local bank and the bank I use doesn't have a bank in Maryland (or NYC for that matter). I don't care if it's online as long as there are ways I can actually get cash when I need it. Capital One ATM is far from where I live.

From a MD 529 email: Note: Beginning on January 1, 2026, the annual limit on the use of 529 plan assets for K-12 expenses will also increase from $10,000 to $20,000.

I need to get a chunk of quarters. Does anyone have a local bank that they could withdraw 2 rolls of quarters for me ($20) and I'll Zelle you? Or, alternatively if you have a suggestion for how I could self-service myself some quarters if I don't have a physical bank.
