i believe it is still a mandate prerequisite

there is an existing open PR but it doesnt seem ready at the moment

The open PR is still in a draft state, the community member who is working on it has not made further updates at this time. DataHub will not currently work without schema-registry deployed, the avro serializer we use from Confluent's libraries requires a schema registry to be available with the correct schemas present.
