Note for non-Americans: 100°F = 38°C. Also known as "very toasty".
  • d
    Yes, not literally boiling 😛

Best advice I know is not only to drink a lot of water, but also to slow down. If you try to do things at your regular pace when it's that hot, you'll end up collapsing.

this is making the rounds over on Substack. I'm usually not one to jump on bandwagons and if you know me in person, this is no surprise. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1085143799946293251/1556826885324017725/my9albums.png?backend=b2&ex=6ac59385&is=6ac44205&hm=e72b0a2e5a2cf9a04897320e8ddc9e76cfffac5450380811df594217f23afaa5&

Get as low as you can! I know basements aren't common out that way, but if you do have one, set up space for yourself and your pets there. If your home is multiple floors, stay on the bottom one. Even sitting on cushions on the floor instead of a chair or sofa can make a difference. And be aware of the umbles, the signs of dehydration: stumbles, fumbles, mumbles, grumbles. Eat wet foods in addition to drinking water.

To whom? It was sweltering hot. I even got physically ill later in the evening. 🥵 The crazy thing is, I used to live in Florida where the temperature was regularly in the upper 90°s and 100°s. The entire 9 years I lived there, not once did I use air conditioning. That was over 30 years ago and I've wimped out incredibly since. 🫣 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1085143799946293251/1556935437568839690/image0.png?backend=b2&ex=6ac5f89e&is=6ac4a71e&hm=6eac7e57cb5d9cb179e04e532d9fe4307cc7284b58a06d8b9998d42e50f38a3b&

I live in a small studio apartment and have to make due with what I have. My fan is running full blast and my cat is a smarty. She knows where to get cool. Where do you live?
  • c
I agree. When it's this hot, it's hard to move fast anyway.
  • a
Yeah. There's a reason why siestas are a thing in hot climates, and why the pace of life & business is often slower there.
  • a
And here's another thought: the great ancient technological civilisations - Greece, Rome, Egypt, Central America, Mesopotamia, Indus Valley - all arose in hot climates. Possibly because people were compelled to slow down enough and therefore had time to stop and think.
  • a
Soo.... maybe stop and use the opportunity to do some writing? 🙂
  • c
Yeah, when I lived in Mexico for almost 3 years it was very common for businesses to close up for siesta time. As for utilizing this time to write...? I'm too wore out and brain dead at the moment. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1085143799946293251/1556947579005042740/image0.png?backend=b2&ex=6ac603ed&is=6ac4b26d&hm=49246a7afbfaaced6c5cddae30315903cf9e3bd6e6da87bd2a74b6c91a97156c&

damn, that is a serious amount of pending subs. And a reminder to myself never to start doing sim subs in case I end up with a list like that, lol
  • k
I've got about 60, which is low for me because I'm not submitting as much.
  • n
I've only got about ten right now. Tough times.
  • m
Three for me, but the press and regular work outside of the literary world have slowed that for the time being. I ought to get around to finishing up a collection I've an idea for.
  • j
We are clocking in at a gentleman's 95 submissions currently
  • n
I do miss being rejected once a week, to be honest. Will take a while to get used to waiting for ages.
  • m
I have abt 13 in progress but that includes residencies
  • s
Eight pieces at five mags, here. But next month hopefully I get back to subbing to 1-3 places per week.
  • p
12 pieces at 9 mags at the moment, but there's been a distinct lull in responses lately. I'm getting a bit creeped out by my empty inbox!
  • j
5 pieces submitted to 16 different mags (longer nonfiction pieces)

The 🇨🇦 Canadian 🇨🇦 poet Anne Carson has been named the 123rd recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature! 🏆 https://www.thejournal.ie/nobel-prize-in-literature-winner-7186508-Oct2026/

Y'all are doing way better than me. The last time I submitted was the last week in September. Right now I have nothing in the works.
  • k
Potentially unpopular opinion: I do not want to hear when a contest has results "coming soon." Just post the damn results when they're ready!
  • k
So far, "very soon" means over 20 hours. I know things are slow in the lit world, but now I'm anxiously awaiting results that might not even be posted today.
  • d
IMO: Just update the dang website. Don’t send an email. Attention is precious.
  • d
(Email when the results are in, obvs.)
