either your account has been hacked or you're a habitual scammer, which is it?

Assorted posts cleaned up.

And here I thought I was being silly in doing so. There's one place I always submit to first before submitting to others, but I've never had to because they've always accepted my work.

What’s your opinion on magazine’s requiring author statements concerning the theme of the issue? My magazine has this for our first issue and today a person just copy and pasted their author bio in the place where this was supposed to go, and I honestly don’t know how to deal with it. I’m considering sending them an email asking for one since it does say in the guidelines that it is required. This is the second time that this has happened, with the first time the person just wrote to read the submitted works (which was extremely rude).

Low-effort submission → low-effort form rejection.

Any writer who is not willing to read and follow submission guidelines, __especially__ when they are as clear and readily understandable as yours, is basically saying that they aren't really interested in the place they are submitting to. This being so, why should the editor be interested in publishing them? I agree with David above: a straightforward form rejection is all that's needed.

(Oh and... by all means post in #1092817008518779001 !)

While it can be tempting to start emailing authors who don't follow easy guidelines, it's rarely productive for anyone. Discretion is the better part of valor and all that. Think of it like running a neighborhood restaurant. If a customer walks in demanding something that's not on the menu and making a scene about it, would you be inclined to drop everything to cater to them?

I think of these types of submitters like a venue who didn’t read the “rider” for a concert. If I said no green m&ms and there are green m&ms in the dressing *room, they probably didn’t read the contract and do the health and safety stuff too. If someone can’t format the way I want or submits something we don’t accept AND the submission doesn’t catch my eye enough to reconsider, I just reject.

Why is an author’s job to format their piece how you want it! Is this not the job of the book/magazine/web page producers? Surely providing a text-only form is enough?

I assume they mean stuff like having a header with the author’s name, having the author’s name nowhere on the manuscript, page numbers, double-spacing, using a 12-point serif font, etc., and not finished formatting.

Hey there! I think you may not have read my explanation, so here goes again 😊 As an example: it’s common for touring musicians to have what’s called a rider with requirements like “no green m&ms” and “these safety procedures must be followed.” If the musician shows up and there are green m&ms, they can also assume the safety procedures weren’t read or followed either. It’s a simple gut check that can save a lot of hassle. As an example for my magazine, we don’t accept anything edited or created with AI, anything previously published, or any poetry. We also request authors follow the standard Shunn Manuscript formatting. If someone doesn’t follow that format, I’m also certain they haven’t read (or cared about) our other guidelines, which means I will scrutinize (or reject) their submissions more quickly.

This is all about efficiency. Readers (and editors) have to work through a large number of manuscripts. It helps __everyone__ if these manuscripts are in a standard format, because they will usually be read and responded to faster as a result. Being asked to use a standard format has nothing to do with what the accepted work will look like on the page when published, which will indeed be the work of someone on their team.

Sorry I was missing the context that you are using the standard plain formats— in this case it is obvious politeness on the authors part to follow the common guidelines. The format can still be used for other submissions so authors should know how to do this in any case. I am more in the poetry world so ‘my formatting’ can be quirky. And of course layout can also be spatial which opens a whole other can of worms.
