Thinking about getting a new keyboard. Haven't had Cherry MX switches before, so I'm not sure if I want Red or Brown. I currently use a GoldTouch split keyboard that has a fairly springy feel and is not terribly loud. I want another split keyboard (preferably one that allows tenting to some extent for ergonomics). Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

After years on low-profile laptop keyboards, tried 'gaming' keyboards - blues, browns, reds... fail 🙂 Very tall keys, with long down-up cycle, just not suitable for fast movement. My kids use them now, but they use only WASD 🙂 no need to move fingers a lot. Also noise, while reds and browns are not clicky, amount of noise is enourmous. Browns has tactile response, so you know when click happened, but they are more hard to press than reds. If I had to switch from laptop to gaming keys - then browns.

I would recommend the browns out of those 2. Reds are more sensitive and led to more errors for me.

I use a cloud nine split with cherry reds. Really nice, but yeah it sounds like a machine gun in here when I am really going lol

I have a Microsoft Surface ergonomic keyboard and a Logitech ergo K860. They are both very similar in layout and size. I prefer the feel of the microsoft keys, comfort and how quiet it is, but unless you're typing constantly, the bluetooth connection times out after somewhere around 2-5 minutes and takes a half a second to reconnect in which it appears to lock up the entire OS while it's doing so. The Alcantara palm rest is a pain in the ass as it always looks dirty. I use rechargable AAA batteries which last about 2-3 months. The Logi is also very quiet. It seamlessly re-connects without me ever noticing but isn't quite as comfortable as the MS. It shares the Unifying receiver with my wireless Logi mouse just fine.

I used to use a wired Microsoft ergonomic keyboard. Still had wrist issues and the ergonomist suggested the GoldTouch V2 split keyboard as it tents higher than most ergo keyboards. My only real complaint with the GoldTouch is the lack of backlighting.

I used the MS keyboard for about 2-3 years then bought the Logi for my home office where it's used about 30-40 hours a week and moved the MS to my onsite office.

The Cloud Nine and Keychron split keyboards look nice, but with the built-in wrist rests they won't fit on my sit/stand platform keyboard tray at home. Some day I'll have my home office completely set up so I can have a full sit/stand desk and ditch this platform thing. Then I can use any keyboard I want.

I have several Keychron keyboards and really like their Q series. I have a Q11 ordered which should arrive in the next couple of days. Ordered specifically because I want the split after borrowing my son’s Mistel MD650L to convince myself I could learn to love that type of split after starting to have some discomfort in my left wrist. I also tried his Ergo Dox and I understand your love/hate relationship comment; just too different for me but I did really like it’s tilting and tenting configurability. I may 3-D print a couple pieces to provide a bit of tent to the Q11 once I’m used to it. For switches, my recommendation would be red switches to start with and a keyboard that supports swapping switches, so that you can try others if the reds are not to your taste as switches are generally not expensive and easy to change.

@rstewart let me know if you 3-D print those parts. If they work, I'd be willing to pay you to make another set for me (if I buy the Q11).
