Is "the French people" bad? Maybe they were just trying to stay under the short format tweet length limit (or they had bad parents).

Well: depends on context 😉. It's easier to see when considering the other way around: it's easier to say "I hate the French", than "I hate French people", as the latter is slightly more personal. It's just a micro-improvement, and is a harmless suggestion. It's good at showing up ppl who are pricks though, when they rail against something so inconsequential.
