https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2021/05/adobe-cf-certification-now-us149-including-many-hours-training/ I'm trying to find a CF video course for a newbie developer in training. We both work at the same company. I've got 20+ years experience in IT, most of it writing code. I have significant experience with CF. I saw the above course and have a couple questions. Can you use Lucee and VS Code instead of Adobe CF and CF Builder. I ask because I'm not sure how literal the videos are going to be about click this button to see this as opposed to covering syntax and general language concepts. I'm trying to give the newbie developer a bootcamp experience. I would do some pair programming with the developer working on simpler projects and progressing to more advanced projects later. He's got experience with HTML, CSS, some light JavaScript and some knowledge of SQL. I was hoping I could find a course that would cover syntax and theory so I could focus more on the projects with him. The Pluralsight course is too basic and stops short. I'm looking for the first half of Volume 1 of CFWACK book series level of knowledge. May some portions from the second half of Volume 1 as well. Things like variable scopes, forms, reading and writing to a db, etc. The reason I'm teaching him CF is because that's the language he would use most at work. He'd rather watch than read which is why I thought this course might help. Is this course a good fit? Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome.

For a newbie, no. This playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3iywAijqFoUD31CQBLsHvJn4WAonNA7r although it uses Coldfusion Builder as the IDE and does not use Commandbox, which for me is not modern enough and not exactly how I trained my jr developer, is decent enough.
The jr web dev I hired about 8 months ago already knew the basics of web development having learned ReactJs and NodeJs in a college bootcamp actually read through the entire material offered here https://modern-cfml.ortusbooks.com/ by Ortus. With a little guidance on how to use Commandbox and how to setup a project for all the examples in this ortus book - it worked out quite well.
The main author of the Certification program you are considering is Nolan Erck, also the author of many videos at https://www.cfcasts.com/ Some videos are free, but most of the good ones require a subscription. In my opinion, the videos are for a mid-level web dev with a wide range of topics, with about half of them being an OSS library created by Ortus and community.

To be fair, command box is a framework engine. Ortus (as pointed out above) does have a fair amount of material for free available as well as you can buy their books to help support them. That all being said, trial by fire. The videos are nice, and the AFC certification videos are great, but making your new trainee learn by doing is the best real-world experience anyone can have.

So, quite a lot of the CFML certification does cross over between modern Lucee syntax and modern Adobe ColdFusion syntax, BUT there are almost certainly ACF specific items in the certification coarse that might throw you for a loop. Also, the final test to get the cert will test on the items learned, so if you're using Lucee and skipped some of those, you might not have a good time. Still, I think overall it is a good body of education, and the cert is worth the buck fiddy (imo but I'm obviously biased). @nolanerck is a solid resource, but busy af these days being all C-suite fancy and all (kidding, love ya buddy ❤️ ) but definitely check out the Ortus boys' vast libraries of info. Yes, a whole lot of it is expecting you to use CommandBox, ForgeBox, etc but... actually that's probably a good thing.

definitely a good thing
