07/15/2022, 12:54 PMthe word blacklist is offensive and should not be usedif you're going to take a stand on principle, be damn sure you're correct about your position. the etymology of the term blacklist has nothing to do with 'people with dark skin' and everything to do with the connotations of the color itself and how it's been used historically. this is similar to how the root of the term 'pussy' has nothing to do with female genitalia and is actually just a slang derivation of the word 'pusillanimous' (https://www.dictionary.com/browse/pusillanimous). it all just seems sad and counterproductive to fight the war of words, especially when the outrage or objections are fundamentally wrong. there are plenty of other truly objectionable words to spend one's energy avoiding than to spend it on the implication that anything prefixed with white- means privilege and black- means racist. it's wrong, and causes more harm than good, imo
