i wasn't aware of the original conversation when it happened, but following the link above this jumped out at me:

the word blacklist is offensive and should not be used

if you're going to take a stand on principle, be damn sure you're correct about your position. the etymology of the term blacklist has nothing to do with 'people with dark skin' and everything to do with the connotations of the color itself and how it's been used historically. this is similar to how the root of the term 'pussy' has nothing to do with female genitalia and is actually just a slang derivation of the word 'pusillanimous' (https://www.dictionary.com/browse/pusillanimous). it all just seems sad and counterproductive to fight the war of words, especially when the outrage or objections are fundamentally wrong. there are plenty of other truly objectionable words to spend one's energy avoiding than to spend it on the implication that anything prefixed with white- means privilege and black- means racist. it's wrong, and causes more harm than good, imo

honestly we don't care about the history, it's the perception..

we should care about the accuracy, and staunchly defend it. legislating based purely on perception is dangerous.

Yeah that was not a shining moment of joined-up thinking on the part of LAS there. Far from being inclusive, I think it's patronising and not a small bit... well... "offensive" (if we're playing the "taking offence" game)... to suggest that unrelated usages of the word "black" are going to be found offensive by all those poor people with more melanin in their skin that you or I. (and before anyone starts... that is not MY thinking, I am projecting how LAS's position comes across). It comes across like the hue and cry there was when that David Howard bloke used the word "niggardly" and ppl got all confused about what it means and just figured it sounded like [another word] so therefore they should get offended.
