For those interested, the job is for a relatively small (~10 people) but growing IT group within the supplier quality organization. We have 2 of our own servers running CF 2023 enterprise. We do a lot of work with data and systems to manage suppliers. Lately our group has been developing AI tools in house that we’ve integrated into our web apps. We have a couple of guys who are geniuses with Python who I’ve collaborated with to integrate the AI functionality into CF apps. Our manager gives us a lot of flexibility to be innovative and creative. For a large company, like Lockheed, it’s like working for a small company within it. Hope this fleshes out a little more the job.

Hey Justin, I realize I'm off topic, but please know it is quickly becoming trivial to use CF to integrate with AI agents. Sure, you could do that with Python, but if you're running a CF engine, it might make sense to keep it in the same language. I think what pushes these kinds of decisions is when someone finds an SDK in another language simply to save time (or have fun with another language). I'm sure your Python geniuses can plug in SDKs, but can they build something like that from scratch? Or asked differently, if it had to be built from scratch, wouldn't it be faster to build in CFML? Unfortunately those decisions often leave CFML in the dust. It becomes a case of using the language most of the team is familiar with. Or in this case, what SDKs are available for your target API. This is nothing new, CFML and CFscript are often undervalued by those who don't write it. And sometimes by those who do write it.

Thanks for the comments. I wasn’t really posting to discuss what we should or shouldn’t be doing with CF, more just to let potential job seekers know about the work and the team. But thanks for the feedback. I don’t think what they are building from scratch could be done with ColdFusion to be honest. The technology has different use cases. We are not plugging into Gemini, ChatGPT or another agent, we are developing in house AI functionality and for that Python is a better option.
Going back to my message about our work, I should clarify that my team mates are developing AI tools that create novel data using both an LLM that is internal and also machine learning algorithms for predictive data. I then call and tap into those capabilities via APIs from ColdFusion. Everything that runs on my end of things is pure ColdFusion. However, I’m pulling the information via APIs that was generated on the end that has machine learning. Hope that helps clarify some what we are doing.

Okay thank you, I was coming from the perspective of what a candidate might be thinking. Building your own LLM is cool, and I will not argue against your decisions, I just think CF could be utilized for more than http events. I do wish you well on your search, I know there are talented folks looking for work. If one has to move to Virginia, it makes sense they can be assured of job security. And it makes sense they can build cool things with CFML.

Oh the job is in Fort Worth, TX. And yeah the job is pretty secure. I’ve been working here 18 years.
Actually, Bill, I do some things on my end with ColdFusion with the data using algorithms to make decisions and recommendations for users. I guess I just don’t consider that AI, although with the expanded definition of AI these days I suppose it could be called that. One thing I programmed was a series of algorithms that look for particular data points, then recommend activities based on those to the engineers. That’s pure ColdFusion.

Yeah, that is what I'm talking about 👍. Now with advances with Lucee, BoxLang, and docker containers, there is no limit to what can be built with CF. Running ACF monolith servers will still have its place, but there is a whole new world now.
