• BoxLang is a thing. What that thing is... Very Thing. Much Actually. Quite Box. • Lucee still exists, honest. • Whoa Mark Takata! Adobe remembered "Outside of US Govt" exists. Bring $$$.

Hey Adam, Good to know Lucee exists, I've had my concerns, I personally love what they do, not perfect, but perfect for me. I am really curious if you have an opinion on BoxLang at this point. I'm sure it is 100% Ortus, but do you see redeeming values? Cheers, Bill

I've migrated our legacy Lucee 4.5 app (running on CommandBox 3.8 on Java 8!) to BoxLang (running on CommandBox 6.0 an JDK 21), even tho' BL is still prerelease (they just cut Beta 1 today I think).
There's BoxLang itself, which is kind of a cleaned up "CFML 2.0" sort of language, and very modular by design, so the core language JAR that you can use for arbitrary programs at the command-line is pretty small (under 7MB!). Even the web server version of BoxLang is only 10MB. Then they have a CFML-compatibility module that essentially compiles old-school CFML to BoxLang, so you can run legacy apps on it (and even mix'n'match .cfm/.cfc and .bxm/.bx files as you migrate your code if you want to move from CFML to BoxLang).

So far, the Ortus team have been extremely responsive to any bugs I've encountered and they're offering a wide variety of ways to install/use BoxLang and its modules. I'm very impressed with what they've achieved in under a year of stealth work at Ortus!

Thanks Sean! Yes, I've noticed some of the conversations you have had with Brad. Man, he is totally on it :) And yes, I've downloaded the web server version too, it's very light as you say, and easy to use. I know you don't have a crystal ball, but do you see this having an impact on Lucee long term? And in your opinion, does the commercial aspect of the Ortus brand deter you at all? To me, BL has a lot of potential, so much so that I'm trying to persuade Luis if I can help promote it. But it's important for me to know what guys like you and Adam think about it.

I actually consider Lucee more "commercial" than Ortus, TBH. I haven't paid much attention to Lucee lately so @Adam Cameron probably has more to say on the state of the project as an outside observer. My sense is that it is understaffed and undermarketed, and I get the impression that quality control and bug fixing needs some attention... but, like I say, that's just a vague sense from what I see here. I don't pay any attention to the Lucee Discourse server, for example. When Micha decided Lucee 5 would be based on OSGi, that pretty much killed the project for me. We have a bunch of "other JVM code" integrated into our Lucee app and there was no way to get it to work with OSGi, and that really accelerated our migration away from CFML. The one legacy app we have left has been pretty much untouched for several years, but we're concerned about the security of running an old CFML app on Java 8, which is why BoxLang appealed to us. I think that if Ortus continue to show as much activity and attention to the community as they are right now, BoxLang will become very attractive for CFML devs currently on Lucee. I don't know whether it would ever eat into ACF.

Adobes licensing $$$ for ACF just doesn't seem sustainable for those outside of US Gov
these thoughts are my own and not those of my employeer, and honestly, the trend seems to be that Adobe cares more about $$$ than it does hanging on to its community, and not just the CF community but also artists and communities that helped build up Adobe with its AI features and its EULA's and lack of perpetual licensing options. And then big shock when Adobe tried to buy Figma and everyone turned around and was like... hold on a minute...
