, is there a way to do a fire and forget type call where you don't care whether it was successful or not (and don't want to wait)? I guess you could chuck it in a thread too, but wondered if there's a better way that I'm missing.

That's how I'd do it. Not necessarily an answer to your question, I know. Haven't had the need to do this with CFML apps, but have done equivalent with same requirement in PHP apps.
