Is 3 gb of ram on a VPS running Lucee & Virtualmin enough for a small Coldbox framework application?
q
80% of my apps run on 1GB ram and 1CPU. BUT it depends a lot on what you are doing. I run pretty slim micro-services for some of them, and basic postcard sites for others.. But docker helps a lot on making your deployments because you can cut out a lot of the OS cruft.
o
@quetwo What do you mean by "Slim Microservices"?
q
I've been splitting up a lot of my larger apps into things like a DB/REST endpoint, business logic, download server, etc. Those are all in their own containers and scale up/down according to load.

Can anyone else let me know of any projects they are running on a VPS with 3gb of RAM and how well it runs? I'm not 100% confident enough that is enough RAM for my small project. I plan on using Virtualmin for the control panel as well.

As @quetwo mentioned, it just really depends on what your app is doing. You could have a single page app that would crawl with 3GBs of RAM. You could have an really large site that runs just fine with 3GBs. You're just going to need to test thing and see how it behaves. Processes like generating/reading PDFs, manipulating images, etc can all require a lot of RAM, so that might not be enough. If all you're doing is serving up static pages w/a little bit of dynamic content, it's more than enough. If there's a lot of database activity, it just depends. How much data are you dealing with? How much are you trying to cache in memory, etc, etc.
o
Just static pages with a little bit of dynamic content sprinkled in. It's going to be a demo app of my project, so a lot of stuff is going to be walled off.

3.5gb ram with lucee is a pretty standard deployment for us. If you’re not doing heavy activities should be good, you’ve said simple app and low traffic. As long as you’re not doing anything batshit like persisting cfcs in session scope should be golden
o
@alexpixl8 Does that include hosting of email accounts?
q
Ookma -- Even given the option, I wouldn't host email on a VPS these days anyway, unless you love dealing with all the spam requirements that you have to deal with these days. But for my smaller sites with medium traffic (between 1,000 and 5,000 hits a day... mostly DB and number crunching), I run them in the lucee-light docker container with 1GB ram and .25 CPU. DB is in a separate container.
a
no we don't do that
the only real way you can find this out tbh is testing
we used to routinely deploy boxes with 4 or 8 gb of ram when in virtual server world
these days we are all containers
but again it really depends on a number of factors
