We're doing a more-like-this search with Elastic and are looking for an alternative to Elastic. I've seen, that Lucene itself has a more-like-this class (https://lucene.apache.org/core/7_2_0/queries/org/apache/lucene/queries/mlt/MoreLikeThis.html). I wonder if I can do this with Lucee and if anyone has already done something like this. Any idea/help appreaciated.

@mborn What was that search you wrote an SDK for? Melisearch?

We use Meilisearch and it works really fine, but there's one functionality the don't have: More like this. This is currently our showstopper for Meilisearch
d
@madmike_de Just curious, why are you moving away from ElasticSearch? Is it because of the license changes they made a few years ago? If so, OpenSearch should be a drop in replacement.

Yep, I love Meilisearch but it's purposely tailored for very specific (I would say almost "simplistic" ) use cases. The benefit of Elasticsearch is there's seemingly no end to cool features. The problem with Elasticsearch is that configuration of that functionality never stops.

@dswitzer Indeed it's a licence thing in the first place. With the new licence I could use elastic internally, but not for a site search on the website. The second thing is what @mborn mentioned: configuration never stops and is really aweful. That's where Meilisearch is much easier to deal with.
@mborn This is a perfect summarize:
The benefit of Elasticsearch is there's seemingly no end to cool features.
The problem with Elasticsearch is that configuration of that functionality never stops.
You're spending the most time with configuration your stuff. And more: Every major update requires a new configuration. I've already voted for the issue on the roadmap and also had a chat with the CEO and main developer. The ticket is from 2020 and there are currently no plans to bring it on the road in the near future.

OpenSearch seems to be a legit replacement. But if it's a drop in replacement, I guess configuration is similar intensive.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the OpenSearch history. It's basically a huge money grab by AWS after they forced Elastic's hand to change the license. But that's not all that relevant to this discussion.
Honest question: if the major blocker to using Elasticsearch is the configuration and maintenance effort involved, have you considered signing ES experts who can keep your system running top-notch without you needing to worry about it? One company in particular is well-versed with CFML as well as Elasticsearch, and even maintains an Elasticsearch integration for CFML platforms. You might give them a look. 😉
m
Not wrong.
But the main question ist still unanswered: Couldn't I do it with the Lucene MoreLikeThis function itself (see start of thread). With this, I could completely get of the Elasticserver itself.
m
If you're doing a More Like This through Elasticsearch, then yes you're doing it on Lucene already. But to run such a query natively in Lucene sounds to me like building your own search engine around Lucene.
m
Don't know how complex it is. That's why I'm asking 😉
m
... probably much more complex than using Elasticsearch, if you ask me. 🙂
If you google "Lucene search engines", you may find a few options. Solr is a decent option, as long as you stay away from whatever ancient version is bundled in Lucee or Adobe CF. https://solr.apache.org/
