This looks like a great focus. To me this looks like the most significant change: > The Manjaro Project will split off from the Manjaro GmbH & Co KG and will become a non-profit registered association (e.V.). I feel like open source + corporate goals are often at odds with each other. It seems to me like the only sustainable way for both to exist is for a non-profit entity to serve as a referee between corporate and community goals. Anecdote about my experience with Manjaro: At first, I hoped Manjaro would be analogous to Ubuntu making Debian easier to use -- but for Arch. I never seriously considered Manjaro for myself since they were based on Arch but somehow offered architectures Arch didn't support (ARM64 at the time, no longer the case). It felt like an unsustainable deviation from Arch (i.e. if you want ARM64 support, Manjaro should have used a base distro that supports it). Not only did I not need Manjaro's installer as someone capable of installing Arch the old-fashioned way, but when Arch itself started providing
archinstall
, it basically neutralized any need I would have for an easy-to-use Arch-based installer like Manjaro. My feeling of Manjaro's unsustainability was reinforced with the community reports around the certificate issues mentioned in the manifesto (i.e. couldn't even do updates). All of that being said, whoever was in charge of Manjaro's styling (icons, wallpapers, desktop environments) was COOKING. Manjaro has some of the best styling I have ever seen. Peak out-of-box RICING. Overall, I hope the project revitalizes itself.
On top of that, they have even more competition with all these Windows gaming refugees fleeing to distros like Bazzite and CachyOS.

Manjaro has a lot of potential, though I honestly do not know why it was recommended so much
I think it has something unique that it can put on the table if it gets its crap together
it was my first distro and I could typically only go a few months without something breaking that busted the whole system. I think if it can reinvent itself as canonical arch but actually easy with sensible defaults you could have something good. (they're styling is def fire)
honestly the reason I am competent with ricing as I am with linux is because of manjaro

> though I honestly do not know why it was recommended so much When it came out there was only one other distro that made Arch easy (Antergos). People wanted the benefits of Arch without being a Linux expert. I think Manjaro was the first real pioneer in this realm -- and I believe is a big reason why Arch even considered making things easier for casual users (many Arch users are graybeard no-lifers who think everyone should be computer experts). Personally, I think Manjaro is the biggest factor besides SteamOS that kept Arch relevant.

yeah, that is totally fair. I don't really think it did a great job with that "easy" promise though (either that or I was using it in its decline)
j
No, I think you're totally right. It was brittle.

it is interesting where Pop then Bazzite and Cachy have been able to show up
j
And if Windows has shown us anything it's that people want an easy experience on their computers above all. People are only leaving Windows because it's making things so irritating they can't ignore it 😂
