Thank you @Peer I have already checked out that documentation. I think this may have been caused by the fact that the upgrade process is looking for user IDs in the user table, but those users were actually deleted.
And also that there are event types in the database linked to those user IDs
I wonder if anyone else has seen a similar issue. It makes sense to me, although it would be ideal if the upgrade could be more graceful in this respect. So I'm planning to spin up a test cal instance to doublecheck which users I deleted, as I am pretty sure those were 'stock' user accounts
