Migrating from ublue nvidia images
# questions
j
Ublue recently voted to deprecate their nvidia base images https://github.com/ublue-os/main/issues/927#issuecomment-3067161343 and I'm looking to use something else. I saw that https://github.com/blue-build/base-images is a thing now. Can I just replace my base image with one of these? (also whats the difference between :gts and :latest tags?) Theres also https://blue-build.org/reference/modules/akmods/#nvidia-driver-optional-enum, but i'm guessing this is missing some stuff compared to having them baked into the base image (like secure boot stuff?).

You can choose basically. The two options will give you a working solution. You could switch to the blue build images with Nvidia drivers included. The only thing is you'd need to enroll the blue build key into secure boot (not a big deal really). On the other hand, the akmod module is probably the right choice if you want to keep a ublue base image. It does the same thing ublue did (and does) to build their nvidia images. So the module is still signed with their key and secure boot will keep working.
In my experience I migrated to the ublue silverblue base + Nvidia through akmod. But I'm evaluating switching to blue build base images because, for example, at the moment the akmod is failing (and so is my image) and I guess ublue people will not pay much attention to it 😅
j
you mean like the akmod version mismatch error? thats happened to me a couple times and it usually fixes itself.
i think ill just try
ghcr.io/blue-build/base-images/fedora-silverblue
f
That's one, yes. And it does fix in a couple of days typically. My image has been failing during the rechunking I think. Tbh I recently tried to make the switch and the resulting system is virtually the same, so will probably make the switch as soon as I have time
g
You'll want to try the Nvidia image
j
lol oops... for some reason even though i switched to that as my base image, my nvidia drivers are still working fine
@gmpinder are we supposed to use
ujust
to enroll the new key? https://github.com/blue-build/base-images/blob/main/files/justfiles/30-secureboot.just i dont think
ujust
is included in the blue-build base anymore
g
We have
blujust
j
ohhhhh
g
Many of the same commands
j
🤯 ty
g
Including ones for secure boot and luks
j
i think
blujust
should be mentioned somewhere
g
It'll be part of the
justfiles
module
Got a PR out for it
j
i think i got it all working under the new base images
huge w
lol i have some scripts that used
ujust
that i need to switch over to
blujust
once the module is ready
but honestly i might switch everything to
mise
because i already use it for most of my development tools and tasks
