Looking forward to seeing everyone coming to The Walrus at 8pm for JavaScript Brighton tomorrow 🙂 Still time to sign up, or just turn up on the day! It'll be the normal networking, social, Q&A type meetup, but with the addition of cake, and some complementary drinks kindly provided by Silicon Brighton during the first hour of the event 💫 https://www.meetup.com/javascript-brighton/events/293190437

So, there’s been a lot of talk about AI/ML as of late, but have any of you been doing anything with such things? Doesn’t have to be anything serious. Any fun side projects, or just playing with the tech. I personally have only got as far as setting up alpaca (language learning thing), and being disappointed with it. 😂 And played a bit with stable diffusion, including training a model on pictures of myself, which had some pretty cool results e.g “jake as a character from a pixar movie” (in thread). Also, if you’ve got something you’d like to show at Async some time, even just a short lightning talk, let me know in the thread. 😁

Hey Guys, just a quick question if anyone might know - I am trying to install PostgreSQL through brew in the terminal and I am being met with this response, should I run: brew tap homebrew/core ? Can’t seem to find an answer online and I’m unsure why it isn’t installing through homebrew’s latest update.

<!everyone> in case you missed it, next week we will be hosting a show-n-tell of artificial intelligence and machine learning. 🥳 Feel free to sign up just to see what others have been dabbling with, but if you’d like to show something off, and or give a quick talk about it, leave a comment on the Meetup, message myself, @alastair or @yanneves in Slack, or drop an email to hello@asyncjs.com. https://www.meetup.com/async-web-tech-meetup/events/293744253/

Hey everyone, I'm one of the organisers for codebar Brighton and we're low on coaches for our workshop at DabApps next week. We regularly have students who are working on JS projects - if anyone would like to sign up and join us (free pizza and trip to the pub after!) we'd love to have you! Sign up at codebar.io and DM me if you have any questions :)

shoutout to Codebar! it's a fantastic place to mentor and learn, don't feel like you need to have textbook knowledge of your subject to get involved, your experience enables you to learn faster than your student and it's a great opportunity to develop and grow your skills too

hey everyone, you'll notice this Linen app that's joined public channels, more info to surface about that soon as we experiment - the tl;dr is Slack is becoming increasingly closed and bad for communities, looking to see what we can achieve to improve the space we have to congregate digitally without migrating away from Slack

As someone who has spoken at async far far too much (although mostly a while ago!) I can highly recommend it. Always a friendly crowd, if you wanted to try doing a talk for the first time then async is a good place to start!

a friend is being offered voluntary redundancy (being told the alternative is redundancy) and needs to get legal advice, my understanding is that they are hiring someone to do the same role, cheaper, in another country so I am not sure that counts as redundancy? Any advice or recommendations of companies that specialise in legal advice for this kind of stuff?

<!everyone> Next Thursday we’ll be joined by Eva Ferreira, where we’ll be exploring different accessibility assumptions and myths, and find how to avoid them by properly testing for accessibility. Please sign up on Meetup if you’re thinking of joining us in person. 🤗 If you have any dietary requirements, feel free to direct message myself, @yanneves, or email hello@asyncjs.com https://www.meetup.com/async-web-tech-meetup/events/293071307/

huge shout-out to @Eva Ferreira for last night's fantastic talk, some key takeaways for me: • accessibility improves the web for everyone • there are plenty of temporary disabilities too that rely on accessibility features • testing with an empanada 🥟 in one hand must become a recognised standard! • you can't outsmart bad design, it's a team effort

also there have got to be some latent business cases for accessibility, such as impact on conversion rate - we know enough to invest in performance and web security, but dev effort committed to accessibility remains a hard sell - does anyone know of any research?

TIL: your Macbook can stop charging because it is too warm. 🤔 Just got caught with 8% battery left, but was not charging. Tried restart/power cycle and still would not charge. Closed it up and stuck it in front of a fan for 2 minutes, and now it works. 🤷
