@Elliot Huntington
SNAPSHOT
versions are available only through these repositories: https://docs.spring.io/spring-pulsar/docs/1.0.0-M2/reference/html/#appendix.non-ga-versions

Yes. Thank you for that useful information. So, am I to understand from this that there are no versions of
spring-boot-starter-pulsar
in maven central? In other words, every version of this starter is still a snapshot version?
a
That question is probably best answered by @Chris Bono

e
Unfortunately, our corporate CI/CD pipeline defines it’s own maven repositories in settings.xml. Since that overrides the definition in pom.xml, I’m unable to access these SNAPSHOT versions.
I really appreciate those of you who are working on this project, and taking time to communicate with us. Thank you.
🙏 1
I guess the version is currently 3.2.0-SNAPSHOT because this library is scheduled for release with spring boot 3.2.0?

Thanks for the ping @Alexander Preuß. Hello @Elliot Huntington 👋 Take a read of https://docs.spring.io/spring-pulsar/docs/1.0.0-M2/reference/html/#appendix.version-compatibility and see if it clears up the versions compatabilities.
👀 1
You can also see the Spring Boot docs on using the framework via the starter here https://docs.spring.io/spring-boot/docs/3.2.0-SNAPSHOT/reference/htmlsingle/#messaging.pulsar
You can use the
0.2.0
GA version w/ Spring Boot 3.0/3.1 and it is on Maven Central.
e
Thank you Chris, I looked at this compatibility matrix. I understand that it is explaining the compatibility matrix between the various tools used in the tech stack. But, when I search for a non-SNAPSHOT version of the artifact
spring-boot-starter-pulsar
in maven central, I don’t see any non-snapshot version there. Am I missing something?
c
snapshots are available on repo.spring.io/snapshot milestones are available on repo.spring.io/milestone ga releases are available on Maven Central.
If you look at the
0.2.0
docs they will point you to the coordinates that will work w/ that version (from Maven Central). https://docs.spring.io/spring-pulsar/docs/0.2.0/reference/html/
In
0.2.0
the starter lived in spring-pulsar and had the id
org.springframework.pulsar:spring-pulsar-spring-boot-starter:0.2.0
. In
1.0.x
the starter lives in spring boot and has the id
org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-pulsar
If you can access the milestone repos at repo.spring.io/milestone you can use Spring for Apache Pulsar 1.0.0-M2 w/ Spring Boot 3.2.0-M3 (which drops tomorrow).

Okay. I see the issue now. If 3.2.0 will be released soon, maybe this won’t be necessary. But I think it would be helpful in the section of the current reference documentation with all the notes about the project being in flux, that it more explicitly point out the appropriate dependencies to use between 0.2.x and 1.0.x: For example I was looking for this:
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-pulsar</artifactId>
<version>3.2.0-SNAPSHOT</version>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
But, according to the 0.2.x documentation that dependency is under a different group id.
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.pulsar</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-pulsar-spring-boot-starter</artifactId>
<version>0.2.0</version>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
It wasn’t clear to me that when I was reading the reference documentation for the current version, that I should have switched to the 0.2.x version of the reference documentation, and that the artifact coordinates were changed so much.
c
Exactly - you got it https://apache-pulsar.slack.com/archives/C5Z4T36F7/p1695148532854139?thread_ts=1695078743.536319&cid=C5Z4T36F7 I can see how that info would be good to be surfaced in one place. I will add that to the 1.0.x docs.

thankyou 1
Okay. I see the issue now. If 3.2.0 will be released soon,
Tomorrow actually (for 3.2.0-M3 anyways). Also, once Spring Boot releases tomorrow, then start.spring.io will be refreshed shortly after and then you can create Spring for Apache Pulsar apps from there. It sets the repos up properly for the milestones etc..
e
On a side note, I’m happy to see, and understand from the changed artifact name, that this project is going mainstream as an official spring boot starter project! Congratulations. Do you know when 3.2.0 is estimated to be released officially?
thankyou 1
Right, but that’s still a milestone.
🙂

https://calendar.spring.io/ and then November 23rd.

And Spring for Apache Pulsar is the Monday before that November 20th.

Do you mind giving this a once over @Elliot Huntington? https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-pulsar/pull/453

Sorry for the delayed response. I reviewed the changes and think they look good. I’m not sure where this documention will appear, but I was thinking maybe an explicit note on this page in section 1.1 Project status where it talks about versions 0.2.x and 1.0.x. I think it would be good to mention the differences in the group and artifact id in those sections. So 0.2.x could explicitly state which coordinates it uses, and 1.0.x could explicitly state which coordinates it uses, while the top section describing the Project Status could state something like this:
Please note one of the major differences between version 0.2.x and 1.0.x is that this project is becoming an official spring boot starter project. This means that in addition to changing the version number, the project group and artifact ids have also changed.
c
Nws. Yeh, it will currently appear in the getting started sections only where the deps are currnetly shown. I think having the extra clarity at the top makes sense as well. Do you mind submitted a PR for it? If you don’t have time I can get to it in the next few days.
e
Nws?
Sure, I can submit a PR. Is the recommended way for me to do that to fork the spring-pulsar project on github (just the main branch) and then create a branch on my forked repository and submit a PR that way? Or is there some easier way to create a PR when making changes to the documentation?
I just forked the repo. I’ll submit a PR.
c
👍
“nws == no worries” -
Acronyms - bad habit. 🙂 Yes, fork and then submit PR is the recommended approach. I thought we had that in the CONTRIBUTING.md or the WorkingWithCode but we DONT. I will add that for the next person.
e
I ran:
./gradlew spring-pulsar-docs:asciidocs
But I don’t see any information about where I can go to review the changes that I made. Do the docs get generated so I can open some index.html file in a build directory somewhere?
c
e
:lol Thank you.

Also, the AsciiDoc plugin does a pretty good job for preview in IntelliJ (assuming you use IntelliJ). There is also a little icon that will pop up at the top-right corner of the asciidoc file when editing it and it has icons for browsers and it will server up the rendered content and jump to that browser for a looksey.
