You should be able to upgrade to the latest 2.x version w/o any issues, and in theory even the 3.x versions. However, I would recommend doing the upgrade in two phases to avoid any client compatibility issues, etc. Making that big of a jump brings in a lot of changes, including default behaviors etc.
