I found some documentation that mentions that you can set the replication factor via

pulsar admin

when creating the topic, but I am not sure if that’s it? Other tools like

pulsarctl

do not appear to expose a way to set the replication factor.

Okay, so looks like it’s a concept that is in bookkeeper not pulsar. I am still not clear as to the actual number of nodes/bookies that the fragments will be placed on. The article you linked says it will be put on “different sets of bookies”. Does that mean all?

Yes, in short, segment is broker term, the “ledger” is implemented in bookkeeper. broker is a client of bookkeeper. the concept in bookkeeper (ensemble -> ack quorum -> write quorum). https://bookkeeper.apache.org/archives/docs/r4.4.0/bookkeeperProtocol.html
