Are we considering upgrade the Kafka lib version to something newer like 2.4+? 

you can build it locally by upgrading the kafka version

any benefit or features we should leverage from it?

also is it fully backward compatible with all kafka 2.x versions ?

One feature we are looking at is the capability to consume from follower replicas of a topic instead of the leader one

I think if backward compatible is not a problem, then it’s safe to upgrade
