Seriously, Ken. Some really good thoughts in here.
I saw Gwen give this as a keynote at Data Day Austin in January. Really worth thinking about.
To Ken and to folks in general, I’d be interested to know what items stuck out to you.

Things I’ve had to deal with that she described… 1. Multi-tenancy. Everyone knows the fear of accidentally allowing a query through that doesn’t filter by the customer. 2. Soft deletes. I have a vivid memory of a manager at Apple saying “The one thing we could do wrong that would get everyone in this room fired is to accidentally delete all of Steve Jobs’ iCloud data.” 3. Active-active. I know she didn’t explicitly mention this (just “Global Databases”), but for DR with true active-active you need to have DBs hosted in distributed data centers. But it means everything you depend on (I’m looking at you, Zookeeper) has to work well in a “stretch cluster” environment. And by “work well” I mean not just reliability but also performance.

The funny thing is that zero of these things require any new research. It just comes down to product investment decisions.
