I think RDS/mysql/mariadb might be more common, not sure. Scaling issues often have to do with metadata cleanup, you don't want any tables growing TOO large. Enabling automatic metadata cleanup can help.

Aurora on AWS. The metadata db isn't really hit that hard.

I think both mysql and postgresql are pretty widely used. at Imply in AWS we're using the mysql extension & a mix of proper mysql and aurora, both through RDS
