Apart from teardowns and case studies what is it that recruiters see in a PM portfolio?

The most difficult challenge is stakeholder management. As a PM you will be working with engineering, design, analytics, business, legal and who not to move the metrics you own. The biggest challenge would be to bring the conflicting stakeholders on the same page and align them to move forward. Talking in terms of the metrics the respective stakeholders look at, why the problem statement is important to them also and how it can improve their life would help you move forward.

Transition to PM role - try to create a strong CV and projects to showcase. Understand what skills firms are looking for in a PM and identify how you have applied those skills in your current role. Highlight the same in your CV and portfolio. If possible, try to contextualize your cv as per the job description. For example - the analytics skill base cv points should be kept on top for data product manager role

Leverage connection on LinkedIn to get referrals
PM portfolio - the live projects which you had worked on supersedes any random teardown or hypothetical case study. Recruiters look for how you apply the PM skills in real life projects where you have n number of constraints. Try to look for internships or projects where you get hands on PM experience.

Building product - β€’ State what is the problem statement β€’ Identify the users you want to Target β€’ Identify the root cause of the problem β€’ Identify is it a worthy problem to solve β€’ Validate that the user will have an ease in achieving their goal by solving the problem β€’ Brainstorm a lot of ideas β€’ Build a criteria to prioritise the solutions β€’ Build an interactive prototype and test the solution with a set of users β€’ Iterate and then develop β€’ Do the pilot or AB β€’ Analyze data - is it moving the output metrics in correct direction, are the input metrics like user engagement healthy β€’ Scale or reiterate

@Jayant Jain Normally, What are the different rounds in a PM interview?
j

Jayant Jain

PM rounds β€’ Introduction and judge fitness for the role as per current and past experience β€’ Product design or improvement β€’ Root cause analysis β€’ Estimations β€’ Metrics (like as an onboarding PM of xyz, what metrics will you track on weekly basis) β€’ Product Strategy - pricing and roadmaps (generally not for APMs and PM1s) β€’ System design on high level (depends on role or team being interviewed for)

Have you observed anything that is missed or overlooked by transitioning PM's
j

No common answer for this. It is PM to PM specific. I can share what I used to miss in my early PM career and how my manager helped me fix it. I used to get very overwhelmed by hearing the point of views of each stakeholder and the thing kept on extending the decision making time period. My manager suggested that I create a framework or define criteria to make that decision and then fill the inputs from user data, user study and business insights from these different stakeholders and make a decision Also, document each and every small thing. Helps in long run when looking back why we made a call

As a person trying to transition to a PM, is it advisable to apply for startups or larger product companies?

Getting into startups would be easier and (might) lead to doing a lot of things in different domains. However, you might get better guidance in an established firm
