09/17/2026, 2:31 PMabctl local install when abctl attempts to inspect the PG_VERSION file in your database volume to determine the PostgreSQL version. The directory is owned by the PostgreSQL container user (UID/GID 70) with strict 0700 (drwx------) permissions, preventing your host user from reading it [abctl local install failed; error reading pgdata version file].
Workarounds You can resolve this issue using one of the following methods:
Option 1: Adjust directory permissions (Recommended if keeping existing data) Allow read/traverse permissions on the directory so your host user can read the version file:
sudo chmod 755 ~/.airbyte/abctl/data/airbyte-volume-db/pgdata
(Alternatively, you can grant read access using ACLs) [Permission issue while installing Airbyte with abctl]:
sudo setfacl -m u:$USER:x ~/.airbyte/abctl/data/airbyte-volume-db/pgdata
sudo setfacl -m u:$USER:r ~/.airbyte/abctl/data/airbyte-volume-db/pgdata/PG_VERSION
After updating the permissions, re-run:
abctl local install
Option 2: Remove the existing database volume (Fresh install) If you do not need to preserve any existing data or database state from a previous run, you can delete the volume directory entirely before reinstalling [abctl local install failed; error reading pgdata version file]:
rm -rf ~/.airbyte/abctl/data/airbyte-volume-db
abctl local install đ 0 button đ 0 button âšī¸ Tip: Mention @kapa.ai in the thread for follow-ups or DM the app for 1-to-1 help.Rafael Felipe

09/17/2026, 2:38 PMabctl local uninstall depends on your goal and whether you want to preserve your data:
If you want to keep your existing data: Running abctl local uninstall alone is not required to fix the issue, and doing so will not resolve the permission error on its own. By default, abctl local uninstall intentionally preserves your data [Full abctl reference], so the restrictive permissions on pgdata will remain [abctl local install failed; error reading pgdata version file].
In this case, you only need to adjust the permissions:
sudo chmod 755 ~/.airbyte/abctl/data/airbyte-volume-db/pgdata
abctl local install
If you want to completely wipe and start fresh: Yes, running the uninstall command is recommended to properly stop the cluster and remove containers before clearing files [Install and manage local Airbyte instances].
To do a full clean uninstall:
1. Stop containers and remove persisted data:abctl local uninstall --persisted[Install and manage local Airbyte instances]
2. Clear any remaining local configuration/data directories:rm -rf ~/.airbyte/abctl[Install and manage local Airbyte instances]
3. Run the installation again:abctl local install đ 0 button đ 0 button âšī¸ Tip: Mention @kapa.ai in the thread for follow-ups or DM the app for 1-to-1 help.
