Am I correct to assume that it is not currently possible to add a private connector, but the only way to hook one up is by a PR to the airbyte repo?

No, that assumption is incorrect. You can add a custom connector to Airbyte without contributing it to the Airbyte repository. To add a custom connector, follow these steps: 1. Get the Docker coordinate of your custom connector from Dockerhub or any image repository that Airbyte can access. 2. In the Airbyte UI, go to the Admin section, and click on
[+ New connector]
on the top right. 3. Provide the display name, Docker repository name (repository + image name), tag, and documentation URL for your connector. Once you've added the custom connector, it will be available in the UI and can be used through Airbyte's API as well. For more information, refer to the [Custom or New Connector](https://docs.airbyte.com/integrations/custom-connectors) documentation. If you're using Airbyte on Kubernetes, make sure the repository name is a valid Kubernetes name. Otherwise, it may cause errors.

Is this only visible in self-hosted Airbyte instances? I'm using cloud.airbyte.com and I do not see a "New connector" button there.

Hey Patrick, custom connectors are only available in self-hosted Airbyte at this time. While we'd love to run custom connectors for you, it comes with some risks (untrusted code inside our walls and all that). Though we are looking at ways to change that for cloud users, we just dont have it ready for today
