Has anyone seen this error whenever they try to call any auth functions: "An invalid response was received from the upstream server"

From what I can tell, this is something that is returned by the gateway API (Kong) but I have no idea why it happens  - it happens on branch new projects where the only thing I've done is to turn off email sign up confirmations
