For whatever it's worth, I just asked my spouse, who's been a front end developer for 6 years, whether someone should start with JS or TS. The response I got was "TS is great, and I love it, but JS is everywhere while TS is only used in some places. So I'd start with JS, then specialize with TS only once it's necessary."
